what’s the deal with airplane peanuts?

Houston Airport: I was wondering about turning off electronic devices in airplanes. I realized the BS involved when I looked down at my digital watch and realized that it is not about electromagnetic interference. The only thing I could imagine is some military application that requires reduced emf in the upper atmosphere. That is ridiculous idea. My current thinking is that they need us not to be hitting ourselves in the head with our laptops while taking off and landing and to for legal reasons pay attention to their safety warnings – because so many people get to use their cushion as a floatation device. They probably just couldn’t find a good reason to ban books. Banning books is never a good idea anyway.
